Manchester United new boy Fred has revealed he couldn’t turn down the opportunity to work under Jose Mourinho after completing his move to Old Trafford.
The Brazil international completed a medical with the club a fortnight ago and signed a five-year deal with the option of an extra 12 months.
United officially confirmed the deal last week, making Fred their second signing of the summer following the arrival of Diogo Dalot from Porto for £19m.
Fred was close to joining Manchester City in January but the midfielder says he couldn’t reject the chance to work for Mourinho.
‘This is the biggest club in the world and I am delighted to be a part of this amazing team,’ said Fred.
‘To work with Jose Mourinho, who has won so many trophies in his time as a coach, is an opportunity not to be missed.
‘I cannot wait to get started and to meet my new team-mates. I would like to thank everyone at Shakhtar Donetsk for everything they have done for me over the past five years.
‘This is a very exciting time for me with my focus now fully on the World Cup with Brazil.’
Fred is expected to slot into a three-man midfield consisting of Nemanja Matic and Paul Pogba. The Brazilian is currently at the World Cup in Russia with his country but Mourinho says he will bring a variety of qualities to the club.
‘Fred will complement our other midfielders’ qualities, which we need; his creative brain and passing vision will give us another dimension to our game,’ said Mourinho.
‘I am very happy he is joining our club and I believe our players know how important he can be in our team.’
