Nathan signed a two-and-a-half-year deal and said becoming a Man United was a dream come true. ‘The opportunity to join the Red Devils is a dream come true,’ Bishop said. ‘This club has a fantastic record of developing goalkeepers, and I cannot wait to work with the coaches here to improve every single day.

‘I want to take the chance to thank everyone at Southend United for everything they have done for me throughout my time there. ‘Without their support, this move would not have been possible.’ The 20-year-old shot-stopper has played 17 games for Southend this campaign but recently lost his place in the starting team to Mark Oxley.

The English goalkeeper has featured for the England U20’s and the transfer comes hot on the heels of the signing of Bruno Fernandes, who joined in a big-money deal on Thursday. Man United have excellent consequences in the Premier League as they are in fifth place in the table.

Asked if he would be signing a centre-forward on deadline day, the Norwegian manager played down the possibility of any incomings before the 11 pm deadline. ‘I don’t think we’ll do any more business. January has always been difficult. ‘It’s not something you do just like that. I am happy with the ones I have here.’
