Manchester United reportedly backed out of splashing just £35 million for Ajax ace Donny van de Beek.
Their shocking start to the campaign continued on Sunday as the club fell to a 1-0 defeat at Newcastle United.
That sees them just two points above the relegation zone, with a top-six finish already looking improbable.
But according to a recent report from The Mirror, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was handed the opportunity to add Van de Beek in the summer but opted against it.

That could have been very different had France international Paul Pogba left the club to sign for Real Madrid – but that move never materialised.
Los Blancos are now the favourites to land Van de Beek, but it could cost them £100 million and it might not be until next summer.
The Dutch midfield sensation scored Ajax’s third as the club thrashed Valencia 3-0 away at the Mestalla in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday.
He was also an important figure in the Dutch champions’ run to last campaign’s Champions League semi-final which they lost to Tottenham Hotspur.
But the Dutch star has made clear it should not be his name on the shopping list as the star wants to stay in Holland for the time being. Van de Beek also stated his suitors are already aware of his desires.
He told a Dutch outlet Voetball: “I will finish the season at Ajax. At Real Madrid, they already know that. I do not like to change teams midway through the season.”
