Former Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri is ‘very close’ to becoming Red Devils next coach. The Italian boss has emerged as a frontrunner to replace Norwegian tactician following Man United’s dismal start to the campaign in which they’ve won only two of their opening eight league games.

Max has been without a club since leaving Bianconeri last summer, and the 52-year-old had planned on taking a year out. However, the Italian coach has made no secret of his desire to manage a Premier League club and negotiations with Red Devils have intensified in the last fortnight.

Talks between the two sides are now described as ‘concrete’, and Max has discussed his salary with the Red Devils, which would be higher than the £7m-a-year he earned at Old Lady. Max is reportedly keen to take the job within the next fortnight, but talks with the Italian do not mean that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be sacked.

The Norwegian manager is under pressure and knows that a heavy defeat to Merseyside club on the weekend will only increase the likely hood of him losing his job. But Red Devils stay keen to stick by the club legend and Max is prepared to wait until the end of the season to take the job.

The Italian coach has also been linked with a move to Tottenham, which could explain Red Devils urgency in speaking to him over his availability. Mauricio Pochettino is enduring his most difficult period at the club and Max is understood to be interested in the Spurs job, too.
