Manchester United are inches from completing a sensational move for Ajax centre-back Matthijs De Ligt as French reporter Julien Laurens claim the Red Devils have decided to meet Ajax’s €75m price tag.
The 19-year-old is currently one of the most sought-after teenager in the world following his eye-catching performances throughout last season.
His huge presence at the heart of defence helped Ajax secure two trophies last season, including the Eredivise glory and the KNVB Cup.
He also led his team-mates to Champions League semi-final round before they were bundled out by the eventual losers Tottenham Hotspurs.
His display with The Godenzonen and his great partnership with Virgil Van Dirk on international scene, have attracted the attention of many top European clubs including Paris Saint-German, Juventus, Liverpool and Barcelona.
Initial reports claim Juventus — who submitted €55m offer to Ajax — were on the verge of completing his signature after the Scuddeto Champions yielded to Cristiano Ronaldo’s desire to see him in Turin.
The reports turned out to be mere speculation as another rumor claimed that he could be heading to the Parc Des Princes Stadium.
Nonetheless, Laurens told The Express that the Old Trafford outfit are closer to reaching an agreement with the Eredivisie side than every other suitor.
“I think there’s a chance where Ajax will lose a little bit of patience and say ‘hang on a minute, PSG agreed, Manchester United agreed. In that case we stop talking to you and De Ligt can choose between the clubs that we actually have an agreement in place’,” he told ESPN FC.
“It’s not really in Ajax’s interest to waste a bit more time about De Ligt.
De Ligt possess obvious qualities which will make him successful wherever he finds himself in the upcoming season. He is physically fit enough to out-muscle any Premier League striker.
His height is another quality which gives him an edge over defenders from set-peices. He will be a good addition to Solskjaer’s side who desperately need new inspiration at the back ahead of next season.
